Fire deaths down in Minnesota

posted by admin in January 3rd, 2010
in News   Tags: deaths, decrease, Minnesota

According to numbers released to the Associated press, the number of fire deaths dropped to the lowest numbers since the statistic started being recorded.

In 2009 there were 32 deaths attributed to fires, which is 20 fewer than what was reported in 2008.

For the first time in several decades, there were no fire fatalities attributed in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The decline in deaths has been attributed to many department’s rapid response time and aggressive firefighting tactics. The drop is also credited to a decline in smoking, an increase in inspections and increases in public safety education.

Fire destroys Kragnes corn dryer

A fire destroyed a corn dryer at the Kragnes Farmers Elevator this morning.

The Dilworth Fire Department responded to the fire shortly before 10 a.m. and spent about an hour putting it out. Fire Chief Kurt Kennedy said the fire started near the burners and was likely caused by chaff that had built up.

The fire department crew cut away metal panels on the corn dryer to get to all the burned corn. Chief Kennedy said the dryer was totaled, but was unsure what the cost of the damage would be.
