Hitterdal Volunteer Fire Department members. Dave Wallis / The ForumFound this good article by Dave Olson at the InForum website. Many fire departments have been fortunate to recieve federal grants for vehicles and PPE, but many smaller departments are still under financed. This story shows how the Hitterdal Fire Department has spent the time to build what they needed, when they couldn’t afford to purchase what they needed directly.

The story mentions that the single emergency warning siren was donated to the department from Moorhead Fire Department when Moorhead updated their system 10 years ago. It is great example of how the larger fire departments and other agencies such as the DNR help Clay County’s smaller fire districts.

The Dilworth Fire Department went along the same lines when they needed a command center. The department purchased a used vehicle and modified it to become the command center. The truck would have never been a reality if not for the hard work and volunteer time of the members.

Hitterdal will certainly enjoy their vehicle even more knowing it was created with their own hands.
