The car was filled with gasoline and authorities believe the flow increased because of the expanding pressure inside the rail car as it warmed in the sun.

Dilworth Fire was called out and upon arrival requested Moorhead fire for mutual aid. Both departments monitored the situation until the BNSF hazardous materials team arrived from Morris, Minnesota.

There was a large amount of gasoline that was leaked during the day according to authorities. The gasoline was contained between the railroad tracks which acted as a dike, and helped avoid any gasoline from seeping into the nearby ditch.

According to BNSF officials, the leak was caused by a valve on top the rail car that was not properly secured. Officials estimate about 400 gallons of gasoline was spilled, but there was no environmental threat to the public.
