Two deaths in early AM Moorhead fire

A fire near the Concordia campus in Moorhead, MN has left two people dead.

The Moorhead fire department was called to respond to a blaze at a four plex on the corner of 9th Avenue and 9th Street south.

Moorhead had assistance with the fire from neighboring Dilworth Fire Department.

Moorhead Fire Chief Joel Hewitt told a Forum reporter that his crew had some initial difficulty in opening a hydrant and that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Minnesota state fire marshall will come to investigate the scene.

Currently there have been six deaths reported in Minnesota this year in comparison to four in 2009 according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Found this good article by Dave Olson at the InForum website. Many fire departments have been fortunate to recieve federal grants for vehicles and PPE, but many smaller departments are still under financed. This story shows how the Hitterdal Fire Department has spent the time to build what they needed, when they couldn’t afford to purchase what they needed directly.

The story mentions that the single emergency warning siren was donated to the department from Moorhead Fire Department when Moorhead updated their system 10 years ago. It is great example of how the larger fire departments and other agencies such as the DNR help Clay County’s smaller fire districts.

The Dilworth Fire Department went along the same lines when they needed a command center. The department purchased a used vehicle and modified it to become the command center. The truck would have never been a reality if not for the hard work and volunteer time of the members.

Hitterdal will certainly enjoy their vehicle even more knowing it was created with their own hands.
